Jeremy Blackwood '03

Theology Lecturer
Marquette University

Bachelor of Arts Degree,
Double Major in Theology and Philosophy
School of Liberal Arts

“The tight-knit Department of Theology and Philosophy provided a learning environment in which mistakes were learning opportunities and questions could be asked easily and confidently. I look back fondly on the foundations that Marian University provided me, in terms of both academics and faith. My life and my faith have never been the same.”

Blackwood received the Sophia Award for his outstanding achievement in the Department of Theology and Philosophy. He was also nominated to the Delta Epsilon Sigma honor society for his outstanding academic success. From the moment Blackwood graduated from Marian University, he realized that the theology and philosophy program had prepared him well. His studies provided him an awareness not only of the materials involved in theological and philosophical work, but also and more importantly, of the critical theological and philosophical positions that allowed him to evaluate new materials he encountered in graduate school.

Jeremy Blackwood, a transfer student, was looking for more than just an education. Not only was he seeking a strong theology and philosophy program, but he also wanted to attend a Catholic college close to home. After his first visit, he knew Marian University was where he wanted to resume his studies. While a student, Blackwood was a member of the Department of Theology and Philosophy’s Sophia Club. Through the camaraderie of the students and professors involved in the club, he experienced and learned the importance of friendships in learning. Blackwood said that his involvement with the Sophia Club was a glimpse of the experiences he continues to have.

Blackwood graduated from Marquette University in spring 2012 with a Ph.D. in religious studies and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Theology there. By the spring of 2013, he plans to move to a new, full-time position for the fall semester of 2013 wherever that may be.
